10 Reasons to Love Mhairi Black

Read my latest CultNoise magazine article on 10 Reasons to Love SNP MP Mhairi Black:

Since 2014, we have seen a huge surge in public interest in politics, particularly amongst young people. Rather than young people being typically disinterested with the political world, they are now making it their business to fight for a better government and a better society.

The political landscape in Scotland has changed dramatically within the last year with the Scottish National Party (SNP) experiencing a landslide in support and winning a staggering 56 seats at Westminster in May’s General Election; something which has never been done by any other party before. One of the politicians at the helm of this new wave of politics in Scotland is Britain’s new youngest MP, Mhairi Black.

A Disney/Pixar Summary of Tory Rule

I’ve always thought that Disney/Pixar films were filled with subtle hidden meanings (e.g. Snow White eating the magic apple could be a re-telling of Eve and forbidden fruit, and, Peter Pan could be a metaphor about children dying and being taken to Heaven etc.) and I realised that a lot of the dialogue in our favourite childhood films is still very prominent and relevant today. Here are my pick of the best Disney/Pixar gifs serving as a metaphor of Tory rule:

Discussing the rise in food banks…

Amy (Film Review)

Featured (23)

When I heard that there was going to be a film made about Amy Winehouse’s life, first of all – I was excited. I grew up listening to Aerosmith and Def Leppard so I was more into rock and metal music than any other genre but I always thought there was something about Winehouse’s music that was universal.

It was so genuine, raw and expressive that it transcended music tastes. Even though she was a jazz artist – a genre which isn’t very commercially successful – her music was globally popular because, like her or not, you had to recognise her sensational, once-in-a-generation talent. To this day, Back to Black is one of my favourite albums and I adored Winehouse for everything from her ballsy attitude to her punk-rock-Barbie style.

The Changing Face of Unconventional Beauty

Read my new CultNoise magazine article on alternative ideas of beauty. In this article I talk about inner beauty, “unconventional” looking models (including Shaun Ross who retweeted the article!) and how the fashion/modelling industry is changing attitudes and ideas of what makes someone beautiful:

9 Reasons Phoebe and Joey Should’ve Got Together in Friends

I have another new CultNoise magazine article for today: 9 Reasons Phoebe and Joey Should’ve Got Together in Friends.

For all us 90s-00s babies who religiously watched Friends until we could rhyme off every single one of Joey’s cheesy chat-up lines, Chandler’s sarcastic jokes, Phoebe’s coffee-house songs, Ross’s attempts to woo Rachel, Monica’s frantic cleaning sessions, Rachel’s crying and even Janice’s catchphrases (“Oh. My. God.”), the ending of our generation’s fave series left behind one little loose end that drives us all crazy.

Sophie’s Choice: Married at First Sight “A twisted take on modern love…” (TV Review)

Read my new Sophie’s Choice TV review on Channel 4’s new documentary series Married at First Sight:

Today, we live in a world where science and technology can do pretty much everything for us. You want Chinese food at 12am but don’t have any cash? No worries, you can pay online with your debit card and get your midnight snack delivered straight to your door. You feel ill? The NHS Choices website will diagnose you. You have a question? Google will answer it for you. I could go on.

We can seemingly get anything and everything we want with the help of science and technology. But can science really be used to find someone’s soul mate? Channel 4’s innovative new docuseries Married at First Sight aims to answer that very question.

Sophie’s Choice: Orange is The New Black – Season 3 (TV Review)

Read my new Sophie’s Choice TV review on Orange is The New Black for Student Rag magazine:

*WARNING: This review contains spoilers*

If you managed to binge-watch the whole of season three within a month like I did (partly so you only had to pay for one month of Netflix), there might be a bit of a gaping hole in your life now because despite its lukewarm beginning, the new season of Orange is The New Black was pretty damn good.

Does it rival with season one and two however? I’m not so sure. One of the biggest disappointments of the first few episodes of the Netflix original series set in Litchfield Penitentiary was the anticlimactic reaction to Vee’s gruesome death.

B.C. A.D. A.H. – After Humanity (Playwriting)

I was looking through some old homework assignments from my creative writing class at university this year and came across this dramatic scene homework task. I really love playwriting but I hardly ever do it because it’s a lot more technical and formulaic than ordinary short story writing but I’d really like to get into it more. One day writing a play that would be put on in a theatre would be the dream. Have a read – enjoy!

B.C. A.D. A.H. – After Humanity

Characters:

  • Malicia
  • Leekie

Interior of a dark underground room with ladders to the left leading up to the outside, letting in dim light. The room is littered with boxes and old rubbish. Malicia and Leekie scavenge for food.

Leekie: [Rummages through boxes with a slightly hunched back and a limp.] I-I can’t believe we found this p-place. We must have p-passed by that trap door 20 t-times in the last week and we only just noticed-

Malicia: [Interrupts.] Shut up! [Pauses to hear something.]

Leekie: What is it?

Malicia: Nothing. I thought I heard something. Don’t talk so loudly. Someone could walk by and hear us. Hurry up and find something so we can get out of here before they get back.

Leekie: Who?

Malicia: The person who built this place. I don’t think they’ll be too happy to find us stealing from them.
